Fra Diavolo 1887J W Turner's English Opera Company

Turner's company had only been on the go for a couple of years, but it was already well established on the touring circuit. The conductor would be a fixture in the team for years to come, as would the bass John Ridding and second tenor Walter Gray. One singer who quickly moved on was the bass Albert M'Guckin - perhaps not as famous as his tenor brother, but a notable name nonetheless.

The Lacy translation of Auber's charming comedy remained in use for several decades, one feature of his version being that the Cockburns were rendered in English as Lord and Lady Allcash.

The cast is as advertised for the Glasgow performance, though there is no reason to suppose there had been any differences earlier on.
