Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's 1930s satire is a remarkable fusion of opera, dance and theatre.  Kally Lloyd-Jones won a coveted Herald Angel award in 2011 for her direction of a sharp and vibrant take on their critique of capitalism.  Setting the action in a 1930s film studio, her production embodies both the glamour, and the desperation of the time.

The staging by Kally Lloyd-Jones was a great success, so a revival was very welcome, at a new theatre, Paterson's Land at the bottom of the Royal Mile opposite the Canongate Kirk looks like being a useful building for years to come.

Most of the original performers returned - just two new cast members (as Mum and Dad). Jessica Cottis, recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, again conducted, and Nadine Livingston and Kirsty Pollock came back to play the singing and dancing sisters.

As before, each performance was preceded by rarely seen documentary film footage from the time to establish the right atmosphere.
