Verdi's Scottish opera was still a rarity, not given professionally north of the border since the visit of Glyndebourne to the first Edinburgh Festival in 1947.

As usual, Haddo managed to field alternating casts for the leading roles. Margaret Leigh-Hamilton was already working with Scottish Opera. James Turner and Donna-Faye Carr were under contract with Sadler's Wells.

On this occasion, effective costumes were provided by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
