Rip Van Winkle 1883Mr R D'Oyly Carte's Opera Company

Read more about the opera Rip Van Winkle

Opening in London in November 1882, Rip Van Winkle was the first of Planquette's operettas to be composed specifically for the British stage, and added to the success still being enjoyed by Les Cloches de Corneville. Henry Farnie's English libretto seems to have been substantially changed and simplified by Meilhac and Gille in their preparation of the French adaptation.

Richard D'Oyly Carte is indelibly associated with his working relationship with Gilbert and Sullivan. However he did mount work by others, and imported many operettas from France.

Cast taken from The Comet, a 'Theatre Programme and Critical Journal' produced for Dundee Theatre Royal (Dundee City Library Lamb Collection 253(5)).

Further Scottish dates to be added.
