Idomeneo, Re di Creta 1953Glyndebourne Opera

Read more about the opera Idomeneo, Re di Creta

The 1953 Edinburgh season by the company from Glyndebourne consisted of three excellent stagings, of which the most popular was Rossini's La cenerentola. The other two were The Rake's Progress, receiving its British premiere, and Idomeneo - not seen in Scotland since the ground-breaking Glasgow performances. It had been given its British premiere in 1934 by the largely amateur Glasgow Grand Opera Society, which made a habit, in those days, of performing unusual works.

So here, nearly twenty years later, Mozart's glorious opera seria was being given its first fully professional performance in Scotland, now in an edition prepared by Edinburgh-based composer Hans Gál.

Cast details are from a programme in the OperaScotland collection.
