Genoveva 2000Opera North

Read more about the opera Genoveva

Genoveva was essentially unknown as a stage work in Britain, though a couple of recordings had given the impression that it was a better piece than its received reputation suggested. Opera North's production was well cast and in the experienced hands of David Pountney and Ralph Koltai. The young American conductor Steven Sloane was newly-appointed to Opera North and made a strong impression.

Despite containing many impressive elements, the opera, like many near-misses, did not quite seem to work as a coherent whole - well worth reviving occasionally, but unlikely to become a repertoire piece.
