Read more about the opera Magic Flute

The first Glyndebourne visit to Glasgow brought three operas. Tippett's final opera, New Year, was given its only Scottish performance. The other works were more traditional - the Peter Hall staging of Fidelio, and Peter Sellars vision of The Magic Flute.

The Peter Sellars staging was not universally admired, not just because of the Californian freeway that seemed to dominate the stage, but also because of textual tinkerings and editing of dialogue. It was certainly very different from its two predecessors in Glyndebourne's distinguished Magic Flute history - the famous John Cox and David Hockney version, which did not come to Scotland, and before that, the beautiful Franco Enriquez and Emmanuele Luzzati version (which did). Still, the musical performance was good, with several principal roles sung by stars of the future. Amanda Roocroft and Gerald Finley never sang opera here again, and Alastair Miles only appeared in opera concerts.
