A rare Scottish outing for Vaughan Williams' superb one-acter, as the meat sandwiched between two lovely comedy productions, Stravinsky's Mavra and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi. Originally presented by students back in 1937, it seems nowadays only to be performed in the music colleges - but as on this occasion, it is a very effective little drama, with a superb example of restrained tragedy in the role of Maurya.
