The first visit to Perth, indeed to Scotland, by English Touring Opera, had opened the night before with a well-received performance of an opera which was then a great rarity in a Scottish context - Massenet's Manon. The Magic Flute, a far more familiar piece, inevitably had more of a sense of routine about it.
