La Verbena is justifiably among the most popular of one-act zarzuelas, and it was quite shocking to think that these delightfully successful performances constituted its British premiere. The King's Theatre was the ideal venue for an intimate and charming little trifle. The staging was basic, relying on the enthusiasm and energy of the performers to put across a popular classic essentially unknown outside the Spanish-speaking world.
