Giovanna d'Arco 1998Edinburgh International Festival

1998 was something of a mini-Verdi Festival in Edinburgh, with this thoroughly enjoyable performance of one of Verdi's less subtle early works. Lots of rousing choruses and marches contrasting with the gentler, more reflective music of the heroine herself. Richard Armstrong, with a strong record in the conducting of early Verdi, was able to add another piece which he would be unlikely to encounter in the theatre. And Anthony Michaels-Moore, well-established as a baritone on the international circuit, made a rare return to Scotland where his singing career started.
