Read more about the opera Madama Butterfly

Some operas took many years to reach Scotland in performance. Madam Butterfly first appeared here quite quickly, only three years after its Milan premiere. The Moody-Manners company gave it four performances divided between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The following spring, four more followed and a fifth was added in Dundee, and when they returned to Glasgow for a week in October, Butterfly was heard once more. 1909 saw a further Glasgow performance in March and two more in October. So, during those three seasons, this new work received a total of thirteen performances in Scotland - eight in Glasgow, four in Edinburgh and one in Dundee. The following year Moody-Manners gave the Scottish premiere performances of Tosca.

The cast is from a programme for 15 and 18 October in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow.
