Zampa 1877Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Zampa

It seems strange that an opera so successfull on the early Carl Rosa tours should have dropped so completely from that company's (and everyone else's) repertoire, within a relatively short time. On this tour it was used for the opening night in a week when Santley would also appear in two performances of The Flying Dutchman and one of Pauline. Santley was very fond of the work, even though the title role was composed for a tenor. Perhaps no tenor was able to produce the dramatic effect that the charismatic Santley achieved.
