John Frank Skalický'

Born Joliet, Illinois, 11 September 1929.

Died Zürich, 23 April,  2006.

Czech (American-born) costume designer.

He was born in Illinois of Czech-American parentage and was educated in London and at the School of Applied Arts in Prague.

At first, in addition to working throughout Czechoslovakia,  he was resident designer at the State Theatre in Pilsen.  Subsequently,  as a freelance designer, his work took him all over the world.

He designed costumes for Munich (Oberon PrometheusDie Soldaten);  Hamburg (Les Vêpres SiciliennesTannhäuser);  La Scala, Milan (Cardillac);  Boston (Lucia di Lammermoor);  Copenhagen (Eugene Onegin);  Amsterdam/Vienna (Rusalka).

By 1970 he was resident designer in Cologne, where he worked on drama, ballet and opera.

In 1978 he designed the costumes for the New York Met production of The Bartered Bride, in sets by his regular collaborator,  Josef Svoboda.
