Josef Anton Bruckner.

Born: Ausfelden, Linz, 4 September 1824.

Died Vienna, 11 October 1896.

Austrian composer and organist.

Anton Bruckner was a largely self-taught composer.  After his father died when he was thirteen, he was sent off to choir school and studied under Sechter. His compositions consist of a large number of vocal motets and a substantial group of symphonies. He did not attempt to compose any operas, in spite of his huge admiration for Wagner.

He did compose several masses and other pieces of church music, of which the Te Deum is probably the most widely performed.
