Background

Genée is remembered today for his work on the libretti of several of the greatest Viennese operettas, including Die Fledermaus and A Night in Venice (by Johann Strauss), Der Bettelstudent (Millöcker) and Boccaccio (Suppé). He was also a conductor and composer of some dozen operatic works, of which two, The Sea Cadet and Nanon, were particularly successful in their day, though they have not survived in the modern repertoire.

Plot Summary

Don Florio has been Cerisette's lover for some time, but is now expected to marry his Queen. Complications ensue when Cerisette disguises herself as a cadet.
