Exciting programme for Edinburgh Festival

The Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) has unveiled its 2017 programme which marks the event’s 70th anniversary. This year’s International Festival runs from Friday 4 to Monday 28 August, welcoming 2,020 artists from 40 nations to perform in Scotland’s capital city.

The nine operas include works from all ages and for all appetites, appealing to both seasoned fans and opera newcomers alike. Highlights include classic operas Puccini’s La bohème, Verdi’s Macbeth (pictured), and Mozart’s...

Rare chance to see Snow Maiden

At OperaScotland we generally try to chronicle the activities of Scottish companies wherever they perform. We also record performances in Scotland by visiting companies - a recent example being the visit of Opera North to Edinburgh with excellent stagings of Billy Budd and a Puccini double-bill.

We have not so far featured performances outside Scotland by non-Scottish companies. However, as it is within our remit to encourage opera-going in all its forms, it seems logical that we should...

New rehearsal space

Silver Cloud for Scottish Opera

Scottish Opera has created a new rehearsal space, called Silver Cloud Studio, in Hillington Park, Scotland’s largest business park located between Glasgow and Paisley.

Silver Cloud Studio, shown left, measures over 5000 square feet and has been converted from a large industrial unit into an attractive modern rehearsal area for The Orchestra of Scottish Opera.

Alex Reedijk, Scottish Opera’s General Director said: ‘I am delighted that Silver Cloud Studio is now open. Suitable rehearsal...

Would you like to help us?

OperaScotland has been looking back over a year of steady growth. All the team have been pleased by the growing interest in our work, so much so that we want to push on over the next year and ‘scale up’ if we possibly can.

But if we are to do this we need help. We want to keep the website as...

New in February and early March

Work has continued behind the scenes, and cast details have been uploaded for the following productions:-

Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1957, 1990, 1993) and Erwartung (1993).

Also see  Malheurs d'Orphée (2017) and Oedipus Rex (1990).

Also Opera Highlights (2017) and Vin Herbé (2017).

Although Opera North has sadly not toured their current productions north, we reviewed and promoted them - see Snow Maiden (2017), Cenerentola (2017) and Hansel and Gretel (2017).

Much work continues to be done in identifying dates of first performance in Scotland for particular operas. This can be immensely time consuming, as digitisation of sources is limited. Hence one has to scan microfilm, a time consuming business.
