Sleepers awake! Opera takes the train

Southward-bound sleeper passengers recently had an unexpected experience. An opera was given its world premiere on a sleeper train between Aberdeen and London. Tenor Robert Lewis (pictured) performed on the overnight train service between Aberdeen and London.

Belongings, inspired by items of luggage carried by railway passengers, was performed Monday night.

It is the first time an opera has been staged on board a Caledonian Sleeper service.

The pop-up piece was performed in the lounge car...

Opera hits heights at 70th Anniversary Festival

In terms of opera, this was the greatest Festival for some considerable time.

For the first time in many years, the Festival had a residency by a major visiting opera company.

The Teatro Regio, Torino, brought Macbeth, the opera that opened that very first Festival back in 1947, together with La...

Would you like to help us?

OperaScotland has been looking back over a year of steady growth. All the team have been pleased by the growing interest in our work, so much so that we want to push on over the next year and ‘scale up’ if we possibly can.

But if we are to do this we need help. We want to keep the website as...

Added since July

The OperaScotland team have been steadily working away.

The Edinburgh Festival has been the greatest for some years and we recommend casts and reviews for the following:-

Macbeth (2017); Orfeo (2017); Return of Ulysses (2017); Coronation of Poppea (2017)  and Boheme (2017)

Look too at Valkyrie (2017); Grimes (2017).

The OperaScotland archivist has been diligently recovering and entering casts for performances by Carl Rosa. You have been able to view performaces from 1874 to 1899 for quite some time, and later ones too.

But we have started to itemise, check and list those in the early 20th century. See Aida (1923); Samson and Delilah (1923); Maritana (1923); Carmen (1923); Tales of Hoffman (1923) or Bohemian Girl (1923)
